How to Make Matcha

Sift 1–2 grams of matcha into a bowl, add about 2 oz of hot (not boiling) water, and whisk vigorously in a zigzag until frothy. For a latte, pour that concentrate over milk and ice or steamed milk.

You do not need a tea ceremony to make good matcha. Sift, add warm water, whisk until frothy, then drink or turn it into a latte.

Traditional bowl method

Sift matcha into a bowl.

Add a small amount of water at ~160–175°F.

Whisk in a quick W motion until the surface is foamy and no dry clumps remain.

Add more water if you want a thinner bowl.

Latte method

Make a strong concentrate with sifted matcha and a little hot water.

Froth or stir into milk. Sweeten to taste.

For iced: pour concentrate over ice and cold milk.

Common mistakes

Boiling water → harsh bitterness.

Skipping the sift → clumps.

Too little matcha in a large latte → watery café disappointment.
